Aug. 18, 2003 ENRIQUE LAMADRID INTERIM DIRECTOR OF UNM CHICANA/O STUDIES
He succeeds Dr. Eduardo Hernandez Chavez, who recently retired. Before coming home to UNM in 1985, Lamadrid taught Chicano and Latin
American literature and folklore at Northern New Mexico Community College
and the University of Oregon. Lamadrid is a scholar and cultural activist known for his research
on mestizo culture, his international field programs, and his community
and student advocacy. "This is a pivotal year for the future of Chicana/o Studies at
UNM," Lamadrid stated, noting that there will be a national search
for a permanent director this year. Lamadrid said his vision of program
building stresses inclusion, cultural activism, Spanish language recovery,
internationalism, and community involvement. # # # |
