UNM STUDENT UNION BUILDING CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING

The recently renovated New Mexico Student Union Building (SUB) at the University of New Mexico will celebrate its grand opening Aug. 26 to Sept. 5 with a variety of activities and festivities, said UNM Associate Vice President and SUB Director Dr. Walter Miller.

"We felt it was extremely important to wait until students were back on campus since the SUB is really their building," Miller said. "It's very important that the grand opening takes place at a time when students can be a central part of this celebration," he said.

The Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting will take place Tuesday, Sept. 2, which has been designated as "SUB Fiesta Day," starting at 12:15 p.m. Speakers include UNM President, Louis Caldera; Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Eliseo Torres; Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) President Aaron Kugler; Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM) President Jennifer Onuska; UNM Student Regent Andrea Cook; and UNM Student Rosalyn Nguyen.

Following the Ribbon Cutting, "SUB Fiesta Day" will continue with "That One Guy," a one-man band performance scheduled for 1 p.m. in the SUB Atrium on the Plaza Level. At 7:30 p.m. that evening, "Rusty Z, the Hypno-Hipster," will present a "hypnosis party" in the SUB Ballroom C. Both events are free.

Grand Opening festivities continue Wednesday, Sept. 3, which is designated as "Student Involvement Day." Current student organizations will be in their offices to provide students with information on each their respective organizations, along with information on how students can get involved and what the SUB does for them.

The UNM Freshman Convocation will also be Wednesday at noon in the SUB Grand Ballroom. That evening, the ASUNM Southwest Film Center in the SUB will provide a free showing of "Chicago" at 9 p.m. Another free showing of "Chicago" will be offered Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 4, is designated as "SUB Showcase Day" and will include UNM Music Department performances.

Friday, Sept. 5 is "Traditions Day" and will include a live lunchtime performance. There will also be several other live lunchtime performances throughout the week.

Prior to the SUB Grand Opening events, there will be two concerts in the SUB as part of UNM's traditional Welcome Back Days activities. On Tuesday, Aug. 26, the band "Vertical Horizon" will perform in the SUB Grand Ballroom at 8 p.m. On Thursday, Aug. 28, the Orange County band, "Something Corporate," will play in the SUB Grand Ballroom at 8 p.m. Tickets for each of the shows are $10 for UNM students and $15 for the general public.
