WINOGRAD ELECTED AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION LEGAL EDUCATION COUNCIL MEMBER

Peter A. Winograd, associate dean and professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, has been re-elected to a three-year term as member of the Council of the American Bar Association's Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar.

The council is the body recognized by the United States Department of Education to accredit law schools.

Winograd, who has served on the council since 2000, chairs the section's government relations committee and is a member of its questionnaire committee. In 1999, he received the Robert J. Kutak Award, presented annually by the section "to a person who meets the highest standard of professional responsibility and demonstrates substantial achievement toward increased understanding between legal education and the active practice of law."

Winograd noted that his activities with the ABA give him a broad view of the issues facing legal education. Helping to develop and apply standards for the approval of law schools has been one of the most interesting and challenging assignments of his career, he said.

Winograd received an A.B. from Brown University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an LL.M. from New York University, and an honorary LL.D. from John Marshall Law School of Chicago. Prior to his arrival at UNM in 1976, he served as assistant dean at New York University School of Law, associate dean at Georgetown Law Center, and director of Law Programs at Educational Testing Service. Winograd is a former president of the Law School Admission Council, a nonprofit corporation that develops and administers the Law School Admission Test and provides other services related to the law school admission process.
