HOWARD SMITH STEPS DOWN AS DEAN OF UNM'S ANDERSON SCHOOLS

Dr. Howard L. Smith today announced he is resigning as dean of the University of New Mexico's Anderson Schools of Management (ASM) and the School of Public Administration in May 2004 so that he may return to his faculty position in the ASM Department of Organizational Studies.

"Last May I began my tenth year as dean at the Anderson Schools of Management and my fourteenth in the Dean's Office, having served four years as associate dean," Smith said. "Looking to the future and approaching the multi-year process for reaccreditation, I believe that now is a good time to transition to a new dean and leadership for the schools," he said.

UNM Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs Brian Foster said Smith has "contributed a great deal to the Anderson Schools, has been a valuable University citizen and has maintained an impressive research program throughout his administrative service." Foster said he plans to begin a national search in the next few weeks.

Smith noted that during his administration the Schools' enrollments have increased by 48.5 percent and the Schools' endowment has quadrupled. Additionally, the Schools have garnered top national and international rankings.

Smith joined the Anderson Schools of Management faculty in 1980. From 1990 to 1994 he served as Associate Dean and subsequently has served as Dean of the Anderson Schools of Management and the School of Public Administration.

He has been an active consultant both nationally and internationally. Smith is also on a number of governing boards and has served as chair of the Health Care Management Division of the Academy of Management.

He has published more than 200 articles on health services, organization theory/behavior and strategic management topics in various journals and has published six books on prospective payment, staff development, hospital competition, financial management, strategic nursing management, and reinventing medical practice.

His most recent book is Reinventing Medical Practice: Care Delivery That Satisfies Doctors, Patients and the Bottom-line (Kendall Hunt, 2002). The UNM Press is currently publishing his seventh book, Mountain Harmony: Mountains of My Heart's Joy.

Smith earned his Ph.D. in Administrative Theory and Health Services Administration from the University of Washington, his Master of Science degree in Comprehensive Health Planning from University of California at Los Angeles, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from San Diego State University.
