ARIZONA GOVERNOR JANET NAPOLITANO TO GIVE ARTHUR A. BLUMENFELD MEMORIAL LECTURE

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano will be the guest speaker for the second annual Arthur A. Blumenfeld Memorial Lecture on September 26, 2003, which will be held at the Sheraton Old Town Hotel at 6 p.m.

The Arthur A. Blumenfeld Endowed Lecture Series honors the life and work of Blumenfeld, former national president of the Government Finance Officers Association and former Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Albuquerque.

During her all-day visit, Gov. Napolitano is scheduled to make several appearances in her former hometown. Napolitano, who graduated from Sandia High School in 1975, will return to her alma mater to meet with specially invited students and faculty to talk about careers in public administration.
She will also visit Comanche Elementary, where she attended grade school. Gov. Napolitano’s keynote speech will be the culmination of a week-long series of festivities celebrating Comanche Elementary’s 40th anniversary. Her speech will be followed with a tour of the school by some of the Governor’s former classmates.

One of the main missions of the Blumenfeld Lecture Series is to facilitate excellence in public administration, an issue that Blumenfeld was passionate about. Keeping this theme in mind, Gov. Napolitano will give a speech at the UNM Student Union Building that addresses the shape and quality of public administration in the United States and the Southwest as well as the administrative and political challenges she has faced in her capacities as Arizona’s U.S. Attorney, Attorney General and Governor.

In attendance will be students and faculty of UNM’s School of Public Administration and Anderson Schools of Management. The luncheon is provided for by contributions to the UNM Foundation/Arthur Blumenfeld Lecture Series.

Gov. Napolitano’s last Albuquerque engagement is as guest speaker at the Arthur A. Blumenfeld Memorial Lecture. The event is open to the public with a cocktail reception beginning at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner and the Governor’s keynote speech. Tickets for the event are $75. Tickets are limited; please email mchale@mgt.unm.edu or call 277-0880 to RSVP. Gov. Napolitano’s other speaking engagements are by invitation only.

The Arthur A. Blumenfeld Endowed Lecture Series is dedicated to furthering best practices in the fields of public administration and municipal finance. Last year’s speaker was former Albuquerque Mayor Dean Rusk.
