Sept. 30, 2003 'DAY OF THE DEAD' CURRICULUM WORKSHOP OFFERED Integrating "Day of the Dead" cultural expression into classroom
curriculum will be the focus of a workshop held Friday, Oct. 17, from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Broadway Cultural Center. The event is sponsored by the University of New Mexico's CLARO, the
Center for Latin American Resources and Outreach, and RETANET Resources
for Teaching about the Americas Network, in collaboration with the Division
of Cultural Services of the City of Albuquerque, South Broadway Cultural
Center, and Art in School, Inc. Workshop presenters are Dr. Maria Casellas-Kelly, CLARO director; Linda
Ulibarri, South Broadway Cultural Center director; John E. Peterson,
South Broadway Cultural Center general curator; and Sara Otto-Diniz,
Art In School, Inc., director. During the Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos celebration Oct. 31
- Nov. 2, Mexican families pay tribute to departed loved ones with a
festival of flowers, food and music. During this time, spirits are believed
to return to their homes to visit with family and friends. In preparation,
children and adults spend weeks preparing special foods, creating altars
in their homes and decorating gravesites. Space is limited and must be reserved by Oct. 10. Professional development hours are available. Call Linda Ulibarri, South Broadway Cultural Center, 848-1321. ### |
