UNM'S CASAA PRESENTS COLLOQUIUM ON COLLEGE BINGE DRINKING

The University of New Mexico's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions (CASAA) will host a colloquium featuring noted clinical psychologist, Dr. Peter Nathan.

The colloquium, "The College Binge Drinking Epidemic: Implications for the University of New Mexico," will be Monday, Oct. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bobo Room at Hodgin Hall on UNM's main campus located at Central and University.

Nathan, a distinguished professor at the University of Iowa, will discuss national data on binge drinking among college students including his own surveys involving more than 1,500 students at the University of Iowa. As a clinical psychologist and university administrator, Nathan will suggest ways UNM students, staff and faculty might begin to address binge drinking and related problems on campus.

Nathan has served as a member and chair of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's (NIAAA) Alcoholism and Alcohol Problems Review Committee, the NIMH's Psychological Sciences Fellowship Review Committee and the VA's Behavioral Sciences Research Evaluation Committee. In 1990, he was appointed to a four year term on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health.

He has received numerous awards including the Alfred M. Wellner Memorial Award from the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, the APA Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge and the Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research from Rutgers University.

The CASAA colloquium series is free and open to the public. For more information call 768-0279.
