October 13, 2003 UNM TO HOST EVENT HIGHLIGHTING COMMITMENT TO COMMERCIALIZATION AND
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, School of Engineering
and the Science and Technology Corporation will sponsor an event, Creating
and Commercializing UNM Intellectual Property: Bringing Innovations
into the Marketplace, Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, from 8:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m., in the Student Union Building Ballroom C. The daylong event is designed to highlight the UNMs commitment
to further commercialization and economic development based on research
results conducted by the institution. Commercializing UNMs innovations
for the benefit of New Mexico is a goal of the Universitys and
the State of New Mexico. Several UNM dignitaries will participate in the program including President
Louis Caldera, Brian L. Foster, Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs, Vice President Phil Eaton, Health Sciences Center, Paul Roth,
Dean, School of Medicine and Dean Joseph Cecchi, School of Engineering,
and will outline and highlight the importance of the goal. The keynote speaker for the event is Michael Orshan, director, Office
and Science and Technology, Economic Development Department, State of
New Mexico. Orshan will also discuss the importance of UNMs commercialization
efforts to the State of New Mexicos plans for economic development. Others included as part of the event are: Ronald Bleeker of Finnegan,
Henderson, Farabow, Garrett and Dunner, LLP, who will provide an overview
of the types of intellectual property, with a special focus on patentable
research results; Dr. Raymond Schinazi, faculty member at Emory University;
and Dr. Waneta Tuttle, a successful entrepreneur who has formed several
companies. They will discuss their experiences in commercializing early-stage
