October 15, 2003 PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FOCUS FOR ALBUQUERQUE CITY COUNCIL
DISTRICT 6 CANDIDATE FORUM AT UNM The UNM Planners Network and the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP)
are co-sponsoring a City Council District 6 candidate forum focused
on planning and economic development issues on Monday, Oct. 20, from
7:30-9:30 p.m. at Woodward Hall 101 on the UNM campus. Community and Regional Planning Professor Claudia Isaac will moderate. District 6 candidates Bob Anderson, Shane Canfield, Linda Doran, Martin
Heinrich, Javier Martinez, Johanna Tighe and Donna Upson are scheduled
to attend. To date, Tighe has not confirmed. Questions for the candidates to answer during the forum may be submitted
by e-mail to maggiemaeadams@msn.com
or javierbenavidez@hotmail.com. For more information and copies of the event flyer, contact Javier
R. Benavidez at 315-3596. The mission of UNM Planners Network is to promote fundamental change
in political and economic systems. They believe planning should be a
tool for allocating resources and developing the environment to eliminate
inequalities of wealth and power in society, rather than used to maintain
and justify the status quo. "We are committed to achieving racial, economic, social and environmental
justice. We believe that planning should be used to assure adequate
food, clothing, housing, medical care, jobs, safe working conditions
and a healthful environment. We advocate public responsibility for meeting
these needs, because the private market has proven incapable of doing
so," said Benavidez, UNM master's student in community and regional
planning within the UNM School of Architecture and Planning. For more information on the Southwest Organizing Project, visit www.swop.net or call505-247-8832. # # # |
