UNM HOSTS HISPANO STUDENT DAY OCT. 21

El Centro de la Raza and Recruitment Services at the University of New Mexico hosts Hispano Student Day 2003 on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Johnson Center in the main gym on the UNM campus. Approximately 1,000 Hispanic high school juniors and seniors statewide will be on campus to learn about UNM's application process and college life.

This year's theme for Hispano Student Day is "Andale! - Take The Next Step."

The Hispano Student Day committee, with representation across campus, organizes the event. Juniors will participate in engaging and interactive workshops. Seniors will also participate in interactive workshops and will also have the opportunity to complete an admissions application and take advantage of onsite admissions with the application fee waived. The goal of the day is to leave Hispano Student Day with a plan of action.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the welcome by UNM students begins at 9 a.m. A counselor/sponsor session will be held from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Mariachi music will also be offered during lunch with a special keynote address from UNM students.

"Hispano Student Day at UNM is a special day for the students who often do not have the encouragement to go to the college," said John J. Lopez, committee member and teacher at Albuquerque High School. "It is a day when our students can get on a college campus and realize that it is not an insurmountable task for them to be there in a year or two. They are nurtured by their fellow Hispanos from the campus who know the value of a college education and are truly interested in their success in life."

El Centro de la Raza and Recruitment Services sponsor the event in conjunction with various campus departments.
