October 28, 2003 UNM DIPLOMAT IN RESIDENCE TO DISCUSS AMERICAN DIPLOMACY AND FOREIGN SERVICE CAREERS A. Ellen Shippy, University of New Mexico Diplomat in Residence and former U.S. ambassador to Malawi, will discuss American diplomacy and careers in the U.S. Foreign Service, on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in the UNM Student Union, Lobo Room A. The program is sponsored by the Office of International Programs and Studies. Shippy has served in the foreign service of the U.S. Department of State from 1970 to the present. Prior to her current assignment, Shippy was dean of the School of Professional and Area Studies at the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute, 2000-2003 and United States Ambassador to Malawi, 1998- 2000. Shippy served as director of the Office of Science, Technology and Health in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental Scientific Affairs from 1995-97; as member of the Board of Examiners of the Foreign Service, 1995, and deputy chief to Kampala from 1991-94. Shippy's earlier assignments included service in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Portugal, Zanzibar (Tanzania), and Guatemala. She served in Washington, D.C., at the State Department in the Office of the Secretary and in the Bureaus of Inter-American Affairs and African Affairs. Shippy grew up in Silver City, New Mexico. She received a B.S. in Mathematics in 1966 from the University of New Mexico and a law degree in 1977 from George Washington University. Before joining the State Department, Shippy was a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador. Shippy began her assignment as Diplomat in Residence at UNM in Aug. 2003. In that role, she educates students and the public about American diplomacy and U.S. State Department programs, and helps recruit personnel for the Department of State in New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and western Texas.
