UNM FACULTY MEMBER RECEIVES LAS PRIMERAS AWARD

Judith Espinosa, Director of the Alliance for Transportation Research Institute at the University of New Mexico was selected by the Hispanic Women's Council to receive a Las Primeras Award. The award celebrates women who are the first in their field and was presented during a ceremony at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Nov. 9. A Spanish reboso was given to Espinosa.

In 1983, Espinosa was the first Hispanic woman to serve in a New Mexico cabinet-level position as secretary of transportation. She also served as New Mexico secretary of the environment. President Bill Clinton appointed Espinosa as a member of the President's Council on Sustainable Development in 1992. In 2002, she was appointed by EPA Administrator Christy Todd Whitman to serve on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council.

Espinosa is a member of the board of directors of the Surface Transportation Policy Project. She is an alumnus of the UNM Law School and the UNM School of Nursing.
