EXHIBITION FEATURES VARIETY OF WORKS CREATED IN 'UNM LAND ARTS OF THE AMERICAN WEST' PROGRAM

Opening Wednesday, Dec. 3, the University of New Mexico John Sommers Gallery presents the exhibition "Land Arts of the American West 2003," featuring the recently produced works of 14 students from Studio Art at the University of New Mexico and from Design at the University of Texas at Austin.

The opening reception will take place 5-7 p.m. at the gallery, located on the second floor of the UNM Art Building, rm. 202. The exhibition runs through Dec. 16.

Land Arts of the American West is a studio-based, field study program dedicated to the investigation of land arts from pre-contact Native American to contemporary Euro-American cultures. The program is a collaboration between UNM and UT Austin.

The 14 students spent a semester living and working on the land in the Southwest led by two faculty. The exhibition features work in a variety of media produced in direct response to the program. Featured artists and designers featured are Katherine Bash, Karessa Bowens, Ledia Carroll, Kate Crowe, Malia Davis, Amanda Douberley, Zach Griffith, Gloria Haag, Ryan Henel, Heather Houston, Mariama Nakigan, Erika Osborne, Xochitl Paredes, Gabriel Romero, and guest artist Tori Arpad. The exhibition is curated by Amanda Douberley and faculty members Bill Gilbert, UNM, and Chris Taylor, UT Austin.
