November 19, 2003 KNME-TV's WEEKLY PUBLIC AFFAIRS SERIES "IN FOCUS" PRESENTS "UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT: UNM PRESIDENT LOUIS CALDERA" KNME-TV's weekly public affairs news magazine IN FOCUS presents IN FOCUS
"Under New Management: UNM President Louis Caldera" airing on
KNME-TV, Ch. 5, Friday, Nov. 28 at 8:30 p.m. and repeating: Sunday, Nov.
30 at 9:00 am. The University of New Mexico is the state's largest institution of higher
learning. It has New Mexico's only medical, pharmacy, law and architecture
schools. It's the third largest employer in the state, operates one of
the largest hospitals in the region and is expected to serve as an engine
for New Mexico's economic development. For years critics have argued that UNM's administration should better
reflect our cultural diversity. In August, Louis Caldera, former Secretary
of the Army, became the first permanent Hispanic President of UNM in its
one hundred and fourteen year history. This week IN FOCUS introduces you
to the man in charge of one of New Mexico's most important institutions.
What are his priorities? How will he balance the academic and research
needs of the university? What can he do about the high number of incoming
freshmen requiring remedial instruction or the challenge of minority retention?
IN FOCUS is an in-depth , television news magazine focusing on the events,
topics, and issues which shape peoples lives in the Southwest, covering
issues that New Mexicans want to know more about, and is a fusion of KNME's
award-winning journalistic, documentary and cultural local-production.
The Producer of IN FOCUS is John Lawrence. The Host, journalist Kate Nelson,
is the Interim Managing Editor of the Albuquerque Tribune. Support for the 39-week season of IN FOCUS has been provided by McCune
Charitable Foundation. Closed Captioning of IN FOCUS has been made possible
by a gift from Ms. Elspeth G. Bobbs. |
