December 4, 2003 Friends of the Libraries to Present Awards The Friends of the Libraries at UNM will present awards to five people who have worked to make UNM's General Library a better place. The presentation, on December 6th is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the UNM Political Archives at 1642 University Blvd. NE. Rose Diaz, Political Archivist for the UNM General Library is scheduled to present the program. She is also the president of the Oral History Association, an international organization with chapters in 29 countries. A special feature for this meeting will be Eric Patterson, of Tom Davies Rare books, who will offer book appraisals to people who bring in their books. There is a limit of three appraisals per person. Five people will receive awards at the meeting. Nancy Meem Wirth will receive the George Clayton Pearls Award for her commitment to the John Gaw Meem endowment. The endowment is an important collection at the library. Ms. Wirth is the daughter of John Gaw Meem, the original architect of several buildings on the university campus, including the Zimmerman library. Linda K. Lewis will receive the Wilma Loy Shelton award for her longstanding commitment to reference services, collections, and access to library services. She is an associate professor and Director of Resource Acquisitions for the UNM General Library and oversees collections and technical services. Kathy Gienger will receive the Jan Dodson Barnhart award for excellence in service to the Friends of the Libraries organization. The award is given in gratitude for her efforts to promote accessibility and literacy. Ms. Gienger is the UNMGL Team Leader for the Gifts and Exchange Section of Resource Acquitions. Elsie Morosin will receive the Hy Adler Award for her excellence in service to Friends of the Libraries as a dedicated volunteer. This award is given in gratitude for her commitment to the Friends of the Libraries shop which provides books and items to the academic and community patrons. Frances Wilkinson, the Associate Dean of the Library will receive the James Fulton Zimmerman Award in gratitude for her service to the library as a staff and faculty member in times of calm and turbulence. The Friends of the Library organization will also present checks to the Dean of Library Services for the collections, and the Health Sciences Library for the Humanities Collection.
