UNM PLANNING GROUP TO HOST BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FOR YOUTH

For the second year, Associate Professor Teresa Córdova and the Resource Center for Raza Planning (RCRP) in the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning, have teamed up with fellow UNM partners Recreational Services and the College Enrichment Program as well as the New Mexico Athletic Association (NMAA) to host a basketball tournament for mid-schoolers on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14 in UNM's Johnson Center.

An opening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. with games starting at 10:30 a.m. and running until 4 p.m.

Architecture and planning and basketball? "Community building is the foundation for our work in the Resource Center for Raza Planning. The tournament is an opportunity for us to promote sportsmanship and a balanced perspective around athletics and bring the larger community together," said Córdova.

Among the schools currently registered are Washington and Garfield Middle Schools, Hope Christian and Menaul School. She said that based on feedback from last year's event, organizers are focusing on participants, parents, coaches and referees all reflecting positive support for all concerned.

"High school athletics are very competitive. Young people must be very motivated and dedicated to try out for and play on high school teams. This tournament is an opportunity for mid-school aged players to test their skills in a non-threatening environment designed exclusively around the love of the game, sportsmanship and community," said Córdova.

Córdova said they will have opening and closing ceremonies and guest speakers. "One of the goals in community and regional planning is to bring interested parties together," she said.

Following Saturday's competition, sweatshirts and trophies will be awarded to the first place finishers while the second place team will receive t-shirts and trophies.
"We in the Resource Center for Raza Planning want to get more involved in youth activities," said Cordova.
