December 12, 2003 The UNM General Library has presented Ed Angel, professor of Media Arts
and Electrical and Computer Engineering, with its Faculty Acknowledgement
Award. Angel's work using computer animation technology for art is a component
of both UNM's School of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts. School of Engineering Dean Joseph Cecchi said, "To say that Ed thinks
out of the box isn't enough. I don't think that Ed ever sees there is
a box." Following the award ceremony, Angel gave a presentation on the Digital
Pueblo Project, a federally funded grant project to provide access to
those not currently connected technically. Angel's Art and Technology
students are currently working with Lodestar Astronomy Center at the New
Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science on a series of groundbreaking
dome animation projects. Their work is attracting international interest
and they are currently putting together a project to be shown at the Olympic
Summer Games in Athens, Greece in 2004. Working with a number of partners on the Digital Pueblo Project to bring
computer graphics technology to rural New Mexico, Angel believes New Mexicans
will eventually have the sophisticated telecommunications infrastructure
needed to connect local artists to graphics markets anywhere in the world. # # # |
