UNM’S CHAPTER OF SIGMA XI, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH SOCIETY PRESENTS LECTURE ON WHITE GOLD OF ANCIENT MAYA

The University of New Mexico’s Chapter of Sigma Xi and the Scientific Research Society will present another lecture in its series of Distinguished Public Talks, Thursday, Dec. 18, at 5 p.m. in room G of the UNM Conference Center, located at 1634 University Blvd., N.E.

The lecture, Salt: White Gold of Ancient Maya, will feature Professor Heather McKillop from the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University.

McKillop’s current research activities include the importance of sea trade and the exploitation and production of maritime resources including salt, sea food, stingray spines in the development of Maya civilization and ancient Mayan responses to rising sea level. She is the author of Salt: White Gold of Ancient Maya (2002), which depicts her underwater excavations of salty works.

Since 1979, McKillop has carried out an active program of field survey and excavation on the ancient Maya of the mangrove coast and the off shore islands of Belize in Central America.

The Distinguished Public Talks Series is co-sponsored by the Offices of the Vice Presidents for Research and for Health Sciences, the College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Division of Continuing Education, School of Engineering and the Albuquerque Section of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers.

he Distinguished Public Talks series is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served beginning at 4:30 p.m. and Free parking is available.
