UNM ARTS & SCIENCES ANNOUNCES GUNTER STARKEY WINNERS

Today the College of Arts & Sciences announced the recipients of the 2003-04 Gunter Starkey Teaching Awards given to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the college's teaching mission through the quality, breadth and impact of their teaching activities.

The professors are:

Patricia Crown - Anthropology
Richard Wood - Sociology
Richard Cripps - Biology

The teaching assistants are:
Patricia Perea - American Studies
Anne-Sabine Nicholas - Foreign Languages & Literatures

A college committee of previous Starkey Award winners selected the recipients from a field of 16 highly qualified candidates. The committee commented that the high quality of all the nominees for the awards provides strong evidence of the excellent teaching that distinguishes our college.

Faculty recipients are awarded $2,000 stipends while the graduate teaching assistant are awarded $1,500 stipends each.

The evaluation criteria for faculty and graduate students differ according to instructional responsibilities. Graduate students are evaluated primarily on quality of undergraduate teaching and the strength of their contributions to the department's instructional mission. Faculty are evaluated based upon the breadth and quality of instructional contributions.
