WINNERS OF CREGO BLOCK COMPETITION ANNOUNCED
For almost a decade, the Crego Block Endowment has been sponsoring a student
design competition in the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and
Planning.
This year's design topic was an observation tower for Tingley Beach Park in
Albuquerque. The entries, on exhibit in the 200 Level Studio in the Architecture
annex on Stanford and Central SE until semester's end, were judged recently
by Daryl Gorenflo, General Manager of CSR Crego Block, and architects Bart Prince
and Antoine Predock.
First and second place winners were selected from each of the three studio classes and four special mentions were also named.
The winners are:
Natalie Du's class:
1st Prize - Julie Stewart, graduate, Silver City HS
2nd Prize - Felicitas "Felix" Banuelos, graduate, Friendship HS, Lubbock, Texas
Brook Finch's class:
1st Prize - Malini Fuangvuthi, graduate, Las Cruces HS
2nd Prize - Audrey McEwen, graduate, La Cueva HS
Gabriella Gutierrez's class:
1st Prize - Marcos Gonzales, graduate, Las Cruces Mayfield HS
2nd Prize - Andrew Robinson, graduate, Manzano HS
Honorable Mentions
Arthur McGoey, graduate, Highland HS
David Kindel, graduate, Los Alamos HS
Mariana Grigorieva, graduate Highland HS
Malini Fuangvuthi, graduate, Las Cruces HS
The winners will receive books by Predock and Prince and Japanese architect
Tadao Ando.
"200 Level Design is the first year of the undergraduate architecture
program. We have 30 students in three sections," says Gabriella Gutierrez,
associate professor in Architecture and Planning. The Tingley Beach observation
tower project builds upon a project the students did last semester, which was
to design a pavilion, or gathering place, as part of an overall master plan
for the park site.
"We thought this project would be ideal for the Crego Block competition since it involves masonry construction. The designs themselves are very detailed and we encourage people to come by and see them," says Gutierrez.
