KRESGE FOUNDATION HELPS FUND NEW ADDITION FOR LAW SCHOOL
The University of New Mexico School of Law has received a $750,000 Kresge Foundation
challenge grant to expand and renovate its facilities.
"The Challenge Grant recognizes the importance of our fund-raising project
and the excellence of our academic program. Kresge was also impressed with the
fund-raising support we have received from our alumni, the bar and our friends.
The challenge is to raise about $3.6 million in addition to the $8.5 million
we've already raised," said UNM School of Law Dean Robert Desiderio. The
Challenge Grant stipulates that the remaining funds be raised by July 1, 2002.
The Kresge Foundation awards grants toward projects involving construction
and renovation of facilities and the purchase of major capital equipment or
real estate. Grant recipients have raised initial funds toward their respective
projects before requesting foundation assistance. Grants are made on a challenge
basis requiring the raising of the additional funds to insure the completion
of projects.
"Only 212 Kresge Challenge Grants were awarded for 2001. The University
is extremely pleased to be selected for this honor. This Challenge Grant will
be invaluable in leveraging additional private funds for the law school addition,"
said Vice President for UNM Advancement Judy K. Jones.
On April 18, 2001, the school held a groundbreaking for the Frederick M. Hart
addition, a 32,000 square ft. plus facility scheduled for completion on Dec.
31. The program for the groundbreaking highlighted the Kresge Grant and its
significance to the Law School expansion.
Expansion and renovations to the law school are projected to cost $12.1 million.
The Kresge Foundation is an independent, private foundation created by the personal gifts of Sebastian S. Kresge. It is not affiliated with any corporation or organization.
