UNM IS SEEN AS STEPPING STONE FOR CLOVIS NATIVE

John GriegoJohn Griego, Clovis-native and University of New Mexico band student, strives for success in first year in college.

Griego, son of Waldo Griego, Rose Griego, and stepson of Dr. Richard Stamm, finds UNM Filled with challenges both in and out of the classroom. The 2001 graduate of Clovis High School looks to UNM as a new source of expression.

One such collegiate form of expression is the UNM band in which John plays the trombone. "When I am making music I feel that I am providing something not just to myself, but also to the people around me," Griego says.

He also believes strongly in the program in which he represents. "What I really like most about the band is that the program allows students to voice their opinions and suggestions," he says.

Griego participates in the UNM Symphonic Band, Soundpack, as well as the Spirit Marching Band. Symphonic Band is open by audition only and allows serious musicians to explore classical and contemporary styles of music. Soundpack provides entertainment at the men and women's basketball games. The Spirit Band is providesentertainment at all the UNM home football games and makes trips to various away games. Soundpack and the Spirit Marching Band are open to all UNM students, but auditions are required for Soundpack. He is the new section leader for the trombone/baritone section in the Spirit band. In high school he was was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award for Band, an award given only top band members as well as Clovis High School's Harlan Beasley/Danforth Award. John Griego believes that the variety of music played by this band is one reason why students are drawn to the program.

Griego is planning on a major in business for now. "I have decided to follow the requirements for the Anderson Schools of Management, but am still exploring other interests that I have," says Griego.

Griego hopes that once out of college he can live a life that benefits those around him. "Regarding a career after college, all I can say confidently is that I want to be a position that works with people to better our society," Griego says.
