April 17, 2002 OPEN FORUMS SET FOR SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT FOR DIVERSITY
INITIATIVES Open forums have been scheduled for three finalists for the position
of special assistant to the president for diversity initiatives at the
University of New Mexico. The position reports directly to the president and the individual selected
will direct and coordinate the University's strategic diversity initiatives,
including recruitment and retention efforts for women and minorities in
underutilized faculty and staff job categories. The individual will provide
guidance to the president, vice presidents and other campus constituencies
on all matters relating to diversity. "We had an outstanding pool of applicants for this position, and
the three individuals being interviewed are all very strong candidates,"
said UNM President William Gordon. Each of the three finalists will participate in two open forums on the
respective day of their visit. The finalists and the dates, times and
locations of their open forums are as follows:
Ibarra served as dean-in-residence, Council of Graduate Schools, Washington,
D.C., in 1994-95. From 1989 to 1997, he was assistant dean for The Graduate
School, University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he served as assistant
dean for the College of Letters and Science from 1986-89. In 1985-86,
he was a legislative assistant for the Wisconsin State Senate; in 1984-85,
was an equal rights officer for the Wisconsin State Personnel System;
in 1983-84, was an employment opportunity specialist for the Wisconsin
State Division of Affirmative Action; and in 1969-71, as an administrator
forthe Mexican-American Migrant and Bi-lingual Education Programs, Community
Consolidated School District No. 59, Arlington Heights, IL. Ibarra earned his Ph.D. in 1976 and his master of arts degree in 1972,
both in social/cultural anthropology, from the University of Wisconsin,
Madison. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1969 in sociology and
anthropology from Northern Illinois University. Baca, who is from Los Lunas, NM, previously served as an outreach specialist
with the USDA, Foreign Agricultural Service, from 1998 to 1999, in partnership
with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture. In 1996-97, she was a business
advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development, Free Market
Development Advisors Program. She previously served as an insurance management
specialist with the USDA, Federal Crop Insurance Corp., in 1991-92; and
as a grain marketing specialist with the USDA Federal Grain Inspection
Service, from 1988 to 1991. Baca earned her master's degree in business administration from UNM in
1999 and her bachelor's degree in management and Spanish from New Mexico
Highlands University in 1988. Martinez served as associate provost, University of Southern Colorado,
from 1997-2001. He also held a variety of positions at Colorado University
(CU), Colorado Springs, including assistant vice chancellor for Academic
and Multicultural Affairs, 1995-97, chair of Ethnic Minority Studies,
1995-96, chair of the Department of Sociology, 1991-94, co-director of
the Minority Graduate Education Opportunity Program, 1989-90; coordinator
of the Graduate Program, 1984-89; and, interim director of the University
Learning Center, 1988. Martinez earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Riverside, 1984; his master of arts degree in sociology from Arizona State University, 1978; and his bachelor of science degree in behavioral science from the University of Southern Colorado in 1976. # # # |
