April 24, 2002 ANDERSON STUDENTS USE VITA SITE TO HELP LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION Accounting students at the Anderson Schools of Management (ASM) at the
University of New Mexico used their Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA)
site to establish an effective partnership with the Internal Revenue Service
(IRS) and ARCA, a local nonprofit organization. This partnership is a great way for students to put into practice
the concepts they have been learning in class and at the same time see
a large benefit resulting from their work, said Craig White, faculty
advisor for the fraternity. Members of the Beta Alpha Psi, the national honor fraternity for financial
information professionals and students in tax classes at the ASM prepared
more than 250 individual tax returns for clients of ARCA. ARCA provides
job training and literacy skills for people with mental retardation and
developmental disabilities in the Albuquerque-area. The student volunteers did a tremendous job, said Bernice
Carlin, case assistant at ARCA. Their professionalism and accuracy
is greatly appreciated. ARCA looks forward to a continuing partnership
with Beta Alpha Psi and the Anderson Schools of Management. The contribution made by Beta Alpha Psi and the Anderson Schools
is the perfect example of partnership, said Dolores Herrera, tax
specialist at the IRS. Both student volunteers and ARCA benefit
from this great association. Beta Alpha Psi is a national fraternity that encourages and recognizes scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field. The organization, found in 1919, has grown to nearly 230 chapters on college campuses across the country with more than 230,000 members initiated in the 83 years since its inception. # # #
