UNIVERSITY PLANNER JOE MCKINNEY SELECTED AS A RECIPIENT OF 2002 HERITAGE PRESERVATION AWARD

University of New Mexico’s Joe McKinney, the university planner in the Department of Facility Planning, has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2002 Heritage Preservation Award by the New Mexico State Office of Cultural Affairs Historic Preservation Division.

The Heritage Preservation Award presentation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 10, at the Scottish Rite Temple, located at 463 Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe. A reception will be held beginning at 9 a.m. and the awards ceremony will get underway at 10 a.m. in the main auditorium.

The awards, presented annually and selected by the Cultural Properties Review Committee, are given to individuals, organizations and projects the committee wishes to recognize for their contribution to the preservation, interpretation, appreciation and understanding of New Mexico’s cultural heritage.

“This is really an honor. I am shocked by it,” said McKinney. “I have been involved in historic preservation in New Mexico for a number of years, but to be recognized by the Cultural Properties Review Committee in the Office of Cultural Affairs as a recipient of the Heritage Preservation Award is truly an honor. It really means a lot to me for this lifetime achievement award as a professional and a volunteer in historic preservation.”

McKinney, who has worked at UNM for nearly 34 years, is a graduate of Texas Tech University where he received his bachelor of architecture in design option and dual minors in city planning, urban history and architectural history.
