April 3, 2002 UNM CONFERENCE EXPLORES NAFTA, AMERICAS INTEGRATION The University of New Mexico Latin American and Iberian Institute will
host the day-long conference "Integration in the Americas: Where
Do We Go from Here?" at the UNM Law School Moot Courtroom Friday,
April 5. The conference is supported by a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation. UNM students are encouraged to attend. Call 277-6839 to register. Due to space limitations, the event is closed to the public. Participants will review what has been learned from the NAFTA (North
American Free Trade Agreement) and MERCOSUR (Mercado Comun del Cono Sur/Southern
Cone Common Market) experiences and identify policy issues that need to
be addressed during the FTAA (Free Trade Agreement of the Americas) negotiations
as well as how to successfully manage any agreement that is reached. UNM Professor of Political Science Bill Stanley will give the welcome
at 8 a.m. followed with presentations by twelve scholars from the United
States and Latin America on four panels. They are: 8:15 a.m., Management of monetary, exchange rates and capital
market issues, with Geoffrey Bannister, senior economist, International
Monetary Fund, Timothy Canova, UNM law professor, Helson Braga, professor,
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and GetulioVargas Foundation, Brazil.
Discussant: Donald Coes, UNM professor of economics. 10:30 a.m., Equity and labor market effects of trade liberalization,
with Mehrene Larudee, professor of economics, University of Kansas, Raymond
Robertson, professor of economics, Macalester College, Pablo Sanguinetti,
professor of economics, Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Discussant: Melissa
Binder, UNM professor of economics. 1:30 p.m., Integration and Security, with Paulo Mesquita Neto,
executive secretary, São Paulo Institute Against Violence, Joseph
Nuñez, colonel, Department of National Security and Strategy, U.S.
Army War College, Francisco Rojas Aravena, director, FLACSO Chile. Discussant:
Mark Peceny, UNM professor of political science. 3:45 p.m., The Politics of Hemispheric Integration, with Frederick Mayer, professor of public policy studies and political science, Duke University, Phil Potter, president, NAFTA Institute, Ken Roberts, UNM professor of political science.
