April 5, 2002 FARMINGTON NATIVE STRESSES COMMUNITY SERVICE Farmington native, Rebecca Trujillo, an English major at the University
of New Mexico (UNM), stresses the importance of community service. She
became secretary of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society in January
2002. Trujillo, daughter of Pete and Cheryl Trujillo, graduated from Aztec
High School in 1998. As secretary of Sigma Tau Delta, Trujillo records
the minutes from general meetings, files important paperwork and maintains
the member list and historical papers for the organization. Members of Sigma Tau Delta must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average
in English classes and a 3.5 overall grade point average. The organization
focuses on mastering the expression of written language and honoring students
who have pursued literary studies as well as professional writing. Trujillo says, "Sigma Tau Delta is an organization in which fellow
honorary members of the English Department at UNM can meet and discuss
different aspects of literature and speech, as well as organize community
functions." The goal for the organization is to involve the UNM campus
and the Albuquerque community with literary endeavors. Carolyn Woodward, the advisor for the organization, said, "Sigma
Tau Delta is coming back after a short period of stagnation." Trujillo
and the other officers for 2002 worked hard to get the organization back
up and running. Their efforts included a language and arts festival titled,
"Communication in the 21st Century: Breaking Down Barriers between
Art and Language." Trujillo is also an active member of the Collegiate Kiwanis, a service
organization that promotes student involvement on campus and in the community.
"I love being part of community service centered organizations because
I have the opportunity to be more active in aware of the community I live
in," Trujillo says. "It is important for me to be involved so that I can give back to
a community that has helped me so much in the past, and will definitely
be important to me in the future." Trujillo is majoring in English with a concentration in Professional Writing and plans to graduate from the UNM in May 2002. She hopes to obtain a MBA and JD in corporate law at CU-Boulder and someday hopes to work in a corporate law firm. # # # |
