UNM PROFESSOR SELECTED AS GALLAGHER VISITING SCIENTIST Dr. Michael Campana, director of the Water Resources Program and professor
of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico, has been
selected as the 2002 Gallagher Visiting Scientist by the Department of
Geology and Geophysics at the University of Calgary in Canada. Campana will present a public lecture on Monday, April 8 on A Unified
Hydrological, Legal, and Economic Approach to Water Reallocation.
Additionally, Campana will conduct a short course workshop on Tuesday-Wednesday,
April 9-10 involving techniques and case studies. The workshop is titled
Water Resources Development and Related Issues in Developing Nations:
A Workshop Emphasizing an Appropriate Technology Approach. Finally,
during the week-long visit, he will present an isotope research seminar
on Thursday, April 11 on the Integration of Ground Water Modeling
and Environmental Isotope Hydrogeology: An Idea Whose Time Has Come. Its obviously an honor to be selected, said Campana.
Its almost like a courtesy. The award was made on the basis
of someone with a broad understanding of earth sciences as it relates
to water. They were looking for a certain kind of person to talk to the
department. Im honored they think enough of me to have me come up
there. Its also a chance to meet new people at a good school like
the University of Calgary and see what they are doing. Campana has been at UNM since 1989 and has been the director of the Water Resources Program since 1997. His research interests include the use of environmental stable and radiogenic isotopes in hydrology and hydrogeology, surface water and ground water interactions and catchment hydrology, regional hydrogeology and water resources in developing countries. # # #
