ASUNM TAKES LEAD IN CAMPUS COMMEMORATION OF SEPT. 11

The Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM) is circulating a form around campus that requests information from organizations and departments planning an event commemorating Sept. 11, 2001.

The form may also be accessed from the UNM ASUNM's website at http://www.unm.edu/~asunm/.
Organizations planning an event are asked to return the form to the UNM Student Activities Center, sac@unm.edu, or send to room 280 in the Student Services Center, no later than Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Information from the forms will be shared with the UNM community.

"I feel that Sept. 11 is a date that needs to be commemorated because it was an immensely tragic time for our country. This tragedy has shaped the way Americans feel about their country and the way they treat their fellow citizens. I hope the UNM community will commemorate according to their own beliefs and sentiments to remember this historic day," said ASUNM President Jennifer Onuska.

ASUNM is planning a candlelight vigil at the Duck Pond the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 11, she said.

Other UNM offices have also announced plans. The UNM Alumni Relations Office said the Alumni Memorial Chapel will be open Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to members of the UNM community seeking a quiet place to contemplate and reflect on the impact and events of Sept. 11, 2001.

To commemorate the loss of life, the Masley Art Gallery in the art education building will host an opening reception for the exhibit "5,000 Flowers," Sept. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. The artwork is by faculty, staff and students in the UNM College of Education. The exhibit will run from Sept. 5-27. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

There will also be a UNM connection at the City of Albuquerque's Sept. 11 commemoration ceremony.

Dr. Paul Roth, dean of the UNM School of Medicine, has been invited to sit on the dais for the noon event on Civic Plaza. Roth is the commander of the New Mexico Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) and will represent the more than 20 members who were deployed to Ground Zero in New York City to provide medical care for the recovery workers.

In addition, UNM Hospitals' Lifeguard helicopter is scheduled to close the Civic Plaza ceremony with a flyover to represent the rescue forces that took part in post-Sept. 11 actives.
