New Mexico Labs, UNM Form Nanoscience Alliance
The top executives of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia National
Laboratories (SNL), and the University of New Mexico (UNM) signed an agreement
in a ceremony Aug. 7, to create a New Mexico Nanoscience Alliance. The ceremony
at the Technology Ventures Corporation featured remarks by New Mexico Senators
Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman, and representatives of Intel, Motorola, Zia
Laser, and Hewlett-Packard Labs.
The New Mexico Nanoscience Alliance will be open to all New Mexico institutions
with interests in nanoscience. Its purpose will be the advancement of nanoscience
within New Mexico and it will provide a forum for establishing collaborations
among all of the research efforts in the state.
The emerging field of nanoscience and nanotechnology will create and modify
materials at the molecular level, atom by atom, to produce structures and devices
with fundamentally new molecular organizations and functions. Developments in
these emerging fields are likely to change the way almost everything-from vaccines
to computers to automobile tires to objects not yet imagined-is designed and
made.
The event included remarks by LANL Director John C. Browne, SNL President and Laboratory Director C. Paul Robinson, and UNM President William C. Gordon. Other speakers included William Garcia of Intel, Tom Brennan of Zia Laser, Jim Prendergast of Motorola, and R. Stanley Williams of Hewlett-Packard Labs.
