Two UNM Faculty Elected Fellows of Professional Society in Electrical and Computing Engineering

University of New Mexico Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (EECE) faculty members Christos Christodoulou, professor and EECE department chair, and Edl Schamiloglu, EECE professor, have been elected fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, pronounced “I triple E”). IEEE is the preeminent professional society in electrical and computer engineering.

IEEE has more than 365,000 individual members, both professionals and students. The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The percentage of IEEE Fellows in an electrical and computer engineering Department is one of the metrics used in national rankings.

“To be recognized by your peers is always uplifting,” Christodoulou said. “As a chair of a department, however, getting such an honor helps inspire and motivate faculty and that is even more satisfying to me.”

Schamiloglu said being elected an IEEE Fellow for his technical contributions brings honor not only to him, but also to UNM.

“This honor is just another indication of how far UNM’s EECE Department and School of Engineering have risen in prominence over the last decade.” Schamiloglu said. “I am very happy to be at UNM and look forward to more of my colleagues joining the ranks of IEEE Fellows over the next few years.”

Christodoulou joined the faculty of EECE in 1999 as chair. Christodoulou has published more than 50 refereed journal papers, 100 conference papers, several book chapters and two books. He holds two patents in optically coupled antennas and is currently the associate editor of the IEEE Transaction on Antennas and Propagation. He has graduated seven Ph.D. students and 38 M.S students. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1985. He served as a faculty member in the University of Central Florida, Orlando, from 1985 to 1998.

Schamiloglu has been on the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1988. In the summer of 1990 he was a lecturer at the U.S. Particle Accelerator School (USPAS) at Harvard University, and in the summer of 1997 he lectured at the USPAS at MIT. He has coauthored/coedited two books, and has authored or coauthored more than 40 refereed journals and 50 reviewed conference papers. To date, he has been the principal investigator on more than $10 million of contracts and grants brought to UNM. Schamiloglu received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University in 1979 and 1981, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell University in 1988.
