ANDERSON SCHOOLS MBA PROGRAM RECOGNIZED FOR SOCIAL IMPACT MANAGEMENT

The Anderson Schools of Management at The University of New Mexico was one of only 16 schools worldwide that were recognized as “showing significant activities in social impact management” in the 2001 Beyond Grey Pinstripes report.

According to the report, which made headlines in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, UNM’s greatest strength in this area is in terms of student coursework.

This recognition, given by the World Resources Institute and The Aspen Institute Initiative for Social Innovation through Business, honors MBA programs that incorporate social and environmental issues into the curriculum. While many people would consider these topics outside the typical MBA scope, a growing number of business people are making the connection.

The Wall Street Journal reports that 77 percent of corporate recruiters said “it is important to hire students with an awareness of social and environmental responsibility.” The business leaders that took part in the study’s roundtable stated that, “stewardship issues are so integral to long-term viability that corporations cannot ignore them and expect to remain competitive.”

“Our social issues faculty are one of our great strengths, and we are particularly proud of their work to encourage our graduates toward understanding social impact and acting as responsible corporate citizens,” said Howard Smith, Dean of The Anderson Schools.

Activities of the faculty and students in this area have included high-level involvement with the statewide Ethics in Business Awards and Professor Jeanne Logsdon’s editorship of the prestigious academic journal, Business and Society. “We are clearly demonstrating there is a link between social responsibility and lasting business success,” said Dean Smith.

In this study, five MBA programs (Harvard University, Loyola Marymount University, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and York University – United Kingdom) were named “Programs at the Cutting Edge.” Eleven programs (The University of New Mexico, University of California at Berkeley, University of California at Los Angeles, Case Western Reserve University, George Washington University, Instituts Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey – Mexico, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh, Stanford University, Wake Forest University, and Yale University) were named “Programs Showing Significant Activities.”
