UNM FALL COMMENCEMENT SET FOR DEC. 14

More than 1,300 students are projected to receive degrees at the University of New Mexico's 2001 Fall Commencement Ceremony Friday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. in the University Arena ("The Pit").

Of the total, the projected breakdown is as follows: 1,067 bachelor's degrees; 175 master's degrees; 29 doctorate degrees; 12 juris doctorate degrees; 19 pharmacy doctorate degrees; and four medical doctorate degrees.

Richard W. Holder, deputy provost and professor of chemistry will be the master of ceremonies. Yasmin Madhani, who is receiving a Master of Arts degree, will give the commencement address.

The UNM Double Brass Quintet, under Conductor Matt Talmadge, will play a selection of music for the ceremony's prelude and processional. The UNM Air Force ROTC will give the color presentation.

Deneile Panas, who is receiving a Master of Music in vocal performance, will sing the national anthem. UNM President William C. Gordon and UNM Board of Regents President Larry D. Willard will then give greetings. UNM Faculty Senate
President John Geissman will give a greeting following the commencement address.

Willard will award Regents' Meritorious Service Medals to Dr. Janette S. Carter of the School of Medicine, posthumously, and Associate Professor Emeritus of Communication and Journalism Henry "Hank" Trewhitt, and the Regents' Recognition Medal to Stephen L. Wilkes, also posthumously, and former United States Ambassador to Spain Edward L. Romero.

The conferring of degrees in course by President Gordon will then take place. Steve Cipiela, president elect of the alumni association, will give congratulatory remarks. Panas will then lead the singing of the alma mater and Los Reyes de Albuquerque will perform the recessional.

Among distinguished guests on the platform will be members of the UNM Board of Regents, President Gordon, Provost Brian Foster, Vice President for Health Sciences R. Philip Eaton, Vice President for Advancement Judy K. Jones, Vice President for Student Affairs Eliseo Torres and Vice President of Business and Finance Julie Weaks.

President and Mrs. Gordon will host a reception for graduates, their families and friends, on the east concourse of the arena following the ceremony. In conjunction with commencement, several schools and colleges scheduled convocations, including:

· Anderson Schools of Management, Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. in Johnson Center. New Mexico State Senator Pete Domenici will speak.
· College of Education, Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. in Johnson Center. Miguel A. Maestas will give the undergraduate address.
· College of Fine Arts, Friday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. in Keller Hall. UNM Prof. Emeritus Tom Barro will speak.
· College of Nursing, Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. in Continuing Education. Undergraduates Scott Lamont and Genevieve Neely and graduate Gloria Sue Doherty will speak.
· School of Engineering, Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. in Popejoy Hall. William E. Garcia of the Intel Corporation, Karen Max, undergraduate, and Todd Bauer, graduate, will speak.
· School of Architecture and Planning, Friday, Dec. 14 at 8:30 p.m. in the Science & Technology Park, 801 University Blvd SE, Rotunda Room.
