UNM STUDENT INTERNS IN WASHINGTON
Danny Milo is a student in the Anderson Schools of Management pursuing a BBA
with a concentration in marketing. He holds two scholarships to the University
of New Mexico, but he's suppressing both while interning in the Department of
Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.
"My job title is Contracting and Grant Management Specialist. The title
has changed three times just since [President George W.] Bush took office,"
says Milo, who adds that his office puts out bids for government projects, selects
a bidder for the project and then handles the contract administration.
Milo, a Deming, New Mexico native, started his internship last fall and his
current contract ends on May 4, but he is looking to roll over into a different
agency for the summer. He says he enjoys life in D.C. even though it's expensive
and he is taking advantage of some opportunities.
"Last night I got to meet the new Secretary of Transportation, Norm Minetta.
He previously served as Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration.
I met [New Mexico Congressman] Tom Udall. Actually, one of his staffers knows
my mother, Gloria Milo," he says.
Whatever the summer has in store for him, Milo plans to return to UNM in the
fall to complete his last semester of undergraduate work. When he graduates
in December he plans to go on to graduate school to earn a master's in public
administration. "I'm looking in the D.C. area - Georgetown and American
University, but I'm also considering UNM," he says.
Milo's scholarships reflect his strong academic standing. The New Mexico Scholars
provides tuition and fees for four years as long as the student maintains a
3.0 GPA. Milo's cumulative GPA is 3.4, and, he says, "I'm on the dean's
list." His other scholarship, the Anderson Schools of Management Outstanding
Scholars Scholarship is sponsored by JC Penney and provides $600 for two semesters.
As Milo says, "I'm keeping doors open."
