TUCUMCARI NATIVE HELPS IN SUB PLANNING
Tucumcari
native Rosalyn Nguyen, a finance student at Anderson Schools of Management,
impacts the University of New Mexico with her leadership skills.
She serves as a member of the Associated Students of UNM government (ASUNM)
senate, a 20-member branch of ASUNM that protects and pursues the concerns of
the students.
Nguyen, daughter of Jan and Dr. Thanh Van Nguyen, was valedictorian of the
1999 class at Tucumcari High School. Nguyen, chair of the Student Union Board
where she oversees which food and retail venues will exist in the new Student
Union Building (SUB), says, "Several of us will be going to Arizona later
this month to visit the SUBs at the University of Arizona and Arizona State
University to meet with their directors and discuss what they see as successful
at their schools. Hopefully, we will be able to gain some insight on some advantages
and disadvantages for our new SUB."
Nguyen is the chair for the Student Union Retail Committee where she monitors
food service and quality of the venues. As a senator, her goal is to have a
coffee cart installed in Zimmerman Library. She says, "When you're studying
for five hours, it gets hard to stay awake. When it gets late I always find
myself needing a break, most often coffee."
Nguyen is also a member of the Student Union Space Allocations Committee, UNM
Trailblazer, The Community Experience, Honors Student Advisory Council, Marketing
Association, Phi Eta Sigma, and Golden Key National Honor Society. She is also
the coordinator and a tutor for the Jefferson Middle School Homework Club.
UNM gave Nguyen the opportunity to become, "the financier, the mentor,
the food critic, the teacher, the team player, the senator, and, of course,
the 24/7 job of the student."
UNM contributes to Nguyen's success as a student, "The knowledge, experience
and people I have met at UNM are valuable assets that could not have been duplicated
at any other institution. It is a great honor, as well as a privilege, to attend
UNM and be able to partake in the various opportunities that are presented."
Nguyen is a Regent's Scholar and plans to graduate in May 2003. After graduation she plans to continue her education in Law School, as well as get a M.B.A. in Finance.
