UNM PROVOST ANNOUNCES SELECTION OF LIBRARY SPACE CONSULTANT
Former MIT Library Director Lucker chosen
University of New Mexico Provost Brian Foster announces the selection of Jay
Lucker as library building consultant for the UNM General Library.
Director of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries from 1975-1995,
Lucker has served as a building consultant for hundreds of libraries and as
space consultant for 21 libraries including Texas A&M, Colorado State University,
Duke and the University of Virginia.
Lucker will be on campus April 15-16. The schedule is still being determined,
but he will meet with representatives from the library and campus community
as well as visit all UNM library facilities.
"The General Library's existing space shortage has been widely discussed
on the UNM campus. The combined total growth of library collections represents
approximately 1.5 miles of shelving annually. I am very pleased to have a library
building consultant as well-respected as Dr. Lucker coming to review our space
issues and assist us in planning," said Fran Wilkinson, acting dean of
Library Services.
"It is well known that our libraries are facing some serious space constraints. Our collections are growing and we are experiencing increased difficulty in providing appropriate access to faculty, students and other users. We are bringing in Dr. Lucker, a renowned library space consultant, to help us take a look at our space issues and needs in a constructive way," Foster said.
