UNM Hosts BTR 2002: Unified Science & Technology for
Reducing Biological Threats & Countering Terrorism
BTR 2002: Unified Science & Technology for Reducing Biological Threats
& Countering Terrorism, the 2nd annual conference, will be held March 14-15
at the University of New Mexico Science & Technology Research Park, The
Rotunda, 801 University SE.
The conference is presented by the UNM Center for Advanced Studies, UNM School of Medicine, Institute for Advanced Technology from the University of Texas at Austin, and Sandia National Laboratories.
BTR 2002 will discuss the underlying science, implications to strategic analysis
and policy, and ultimately operational effectiveness within the realm of homeland
security. This open public forum will bring together government, industry, and
academic leaders for discussions focusing on three specific areas: (1) sensing
of the environment and validation of an attack; (2) information management and
C2; and (3) the human-in-the-loop and operational effectiveness, sustainability,
and surge capacity. A plenary will be held for each session, followed by presentations
by national security strategists, faculty from leading science and engineering
departments at universities and DOE and DoD laboratories and industrial scientists.
Selected posters will be displayed in the meeting room. The sessions will conclude
with panel discussions with the presenters, designed to provide opportunities
for informal explorations of these critical topics.
The conference chair is Dr. Robert V. Duncan, UNM Department of Physics and
Astronomy; the program chair is Dr. Annette L. Sobel, Sandia National Laboratories.
The BTR 2002 Keynote Speaker, Dr. Hans M. Mark, will discuss the topic of Thinking
about Biological Weapons.
All presenters are required to submit a narrative paper for publication in
the Proceedings. Presentations must be non-proprietary and prepared for a public
forum.
Conference registration forms with fees must be received for all attendees and presenters. The registration fee, $150 by Feb. 4 and $200 after, includes continental breakfast and lunch each day, and one copy each of the Program and Abstracts and the Proceedings. For information on conference activities, contact Barbara L. Daniels, BTR 2002 Coordinator at daniels@unm.edu or 272-7214 or check out http://coffee.phys.unm.edu/BTR.
