UNM GALLUP BRANCH DIRECTOR ACCEPTS CALIFORNIA POSITION
Robert E. Carlson, Executive Director of the University of New Mexico Gallup
Branch since September 1995, today announced he will leave that position "no
later than Feb. 1, 2002" to begin work as President of Chabot College in
Hayward, CA.
Carlson said his major accomplishments at the UNM Gallup Branch have been to
"connect the campus to the community, the implementation of a construction
program that has nearly doubled the size of the campus; the building of a community
foundation and the development of an award-winning planning process. It's been
a great six and a half years."
Before coming to UNM, Carlson held various teaching and administrative positions
with the San Diego Community College District; Miramar College, San Diego; City
College, San Diego; Southern West Virginia Community College, Williamson, WV;
Illinois Department of Education, Chicago, Il.; and others.
He earned his Doctorate in Education and Business Administration from Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA, in 1976; his Master's
and Bachelor's degrees, both from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale,
Il; and his Associate Degree from the School of Technical Careers, also at Southern
Illinois University.
"During Bob's tenure a great deal of progress was made at the Gallup campus,"
said UNM Provost Brian L. Foster. "This includes significant growth in
the Branch's physical plant as well as gains in enrollment. We appreciate Bob's
contributions and wish him well in his new position."
Foster said he will name an interim director for the UNM Gallup Branch in the near future and then will initiate a search for a permanent director sometime this spring.
