July 19, 2002 UNM'S BERRY NAMED FELLOW OF AMERICAN SOCIETY OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
"Designation as fellow by the ASLA is a distinction awarded to a
very, select few in the United States. Not only is this an honor for Gil
personally, but also an honor for the institution. His award as fellow
recognizes his long and distinguished career in landscape architecture
and his status in the profession," says Roger Lujan, director of
Facility Planning. Berry earned a bachelor's in landscape architecture at the University
of Arizona in 1966. He was hired as UNM's landscape architect in 1984.
Prior, he worked for the State Highway Dept.'s roadside environment unit.
In the 1970s he had his own landscape architectural consulting practice.
He has been a registered landscape architect since 1986 and has served
the New Mexico chapter of ASLA in several capacities including president.
The chapter awarded him with the Service to the Chapter Merit Award in
1985. Berry has more that 45 awards and recognition for UNM projects under
his direct design or control. Those honoring him include the American
Institute of Architects in the state, nationally and regionally; the City
of Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Conservation Assn., Associated General
Contractors and the New Mexico Arts Division. The nomination letter President Brian Verardo, New Mexico chapter of
ASLA, submitted, said, "Perhaps Gil's greatest contribution to landscape
architecture in New Mexico and across the United States is his long tenure
on the State's Architects, Engineers, and Landscape Architects Joint Practices
Committee (JPC)." In his career spanning more than 35 years, Berry has volunteered for
numerous boards and committees including the City of Albuquerque Beautification
Committee, Project I Board, City of Albuquerque Landscape Architect Selection
Committee, New Mexico State University Master Gardener course instructor,
and Albuquerque Public Schools Career Exploration Mentorship Program.
Additionally, he has served as guest lecturer and critic in the UNM School
of Architecture and Planning. "Becoming a Fellow of the ASLA is a prestigious honor that recognizes
special leadership in the landscape architecture profession. Gil's efforts
and contributions have benefited this campus directly, obviously, and
enriched the lives of the many people who work, study and visit UNM. He
has also been instrumental in shaping our new program, the Master of Landscape
Architecture degree, the only such graduate program in the state. I am
delighted that he has been elevated to this select group of our nation's
premier landscape architects," says Roger Schluntz, FAIA, dean of
the UNM School of Architecture and Planning. ### |
