UNM COLLEGE OF EDUCATION NEARLY DOUBLES FUNDRAISING GOAL

The University of New Mexico College of Education (COE) exceeded more than $1 million in private donations for fiscal year 2001 - nearly doubling its goal. The UNM fiscal year ended June 30.

With generous support of alumni and friends, as well as visionary philanthropy from corporations and foundations, the COE experienced a record year. Funds included both cash and "in kind" gifts such as advanced computer technology, artwork and services.

The largest donations came from corporate and foundation sources, including the Hewlett-Packard Company, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Intel Corporation, Kellogg Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, Spencer Foundation and McCune Foundation.

Top individual donors included COE Professor Virginia C. Shipman, COE Advancement Council members Max and Annie Flatow, Charles and Suzie Manhoff and Matherly family members Cheryl Ann, James and Larry.

Details on the gifts and COE initiatives the donors support can be found on the College's website: http://coe.unm.edu.

"This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy in light of the fact that the COE Development Office has been in existence only two and a half years," said COE Dean Viola E. Florez, who, in cooperation with then-UNM Foundation Director Duffy Swan, established the new office in January 2000. Jeff A. Hale, Ph.D, was hired as the college's first development director. Margaret Duran, development specialist was hired in the fall of 2000.

In a statement thanking donors and supporters, Hale said, "Your support has increased scholarship dollars for future educators, vastly expanded professional development outreach for teachers and school administrators from across New Mexico, built and/or solidified meaningful partnerships with school districts and other educational institutions, and advanced the College's reputation, both nationally and internationally."
