July 30, 2002 Advanced Materials Laboratory at UNM Science and Technology
Park to celebrate 10 years of success University of New Mexico will be joined by Sandia National Laboratories,
the Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute, the ATR Institute, and
private industry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of the UNM Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML). The laboratory is located in the UNM Science and Technology Park just
south of UNMs main campus at 1001 University Blvd. The New Mexico
State Legislature created the park to promote the public welfare
and prosperity of the people of New Mexico and foster economic development
within the state by forging links between the states educational
institutions, business and industrial communities and government
The AML houses about 120 staff, faculty, and students from the University,
Sandia and several private companies in a single, integrated materials
research laboratory. The laboratory supports collaboration among Sandia,
UNM, and U.S. companies in materials and process research, development,
and application, and aids in transferring the resulting technologies to
U.S. industry. The AML reports directly to the UNM Provost and it is administered
by representatives of UNM and Sandia. The 45,000-square-foot laboratory opened in August 1992 and is equipped
with a broad range of state-of-the-art equipment for materials synthesis,
processing and characterization. The celebration will include remarks by Judith Espinosa, director of
the ATR Institute; Steve Benavidez, associate dean of Technologies at
TVI, and others. Abhaya Datye, director of Ceramic and Composite Materials and Chemical
and Nuclear Engineering professor at UNM, said the AML represents an important
way in which UNM interacts with the national laboratories. The Advanced Materials Laboratory has helped us interact with industry,
both locally and nationally, Datye said. The spin off companies
that have resulted are contributing to economic growth in New Mexico and
the AML has also helped expand the scope of educational opportunities
for students at UNM. Bill Hammetter, manager of Sandias Ceramic Materials Department,
said the AML provides for easy and frequent interactions with students
and serves as a forum in which Sandia can partner with UNM on a variety
of projects. For instance, Sandia and UNM have received funding through
the laboratory from both the National Institutes of Health and the National
Science Foundation to do collaborative work in the biosciences. The AML is a unique combination of many parts of Sandias
main facilities located six miles away, Hammetter said. We
believe it provides us with a unique strategic advantage. ### |
