July 31, 2002 UNM WATER RESOURCES PROGRAM TO BEGIN COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT WITH
ZAMORANO IN HONDURAS The Water Resources Program (WRP) at the University of New Mexico will
soon begin a two-year collaborative program with the Escuela Agricola
Panamericana (Zamorano) in Honduras to establish a Central American Water
Resources Development Center. The center will create a regional, national and local entity for the
integrated management of water resources. UNM Water Resources Program Director Michael Campana will also seek to
develop a joint professional masters degree in water resources at
Zamorano in conjunction with the center. The idea behind the center, which was proposed to the United States Agency
for International Development (USAID), is to bring financial and technical
resources to an accessible setting and to provide practical models of
integrated water management to those who work with water resources in
Central America. The center will be a tremendous asset to Central America in that
it will greatly facilitate capacity-building in water resources, one of
the regions shortcomings, Campana said. UNMs partnership
with Zamorano, one of the premier private institutions in Central America,
will marry two strong programs UNMs expertise in water resources
and Zamoranos strengths in resource development and management
to create a trenchant partnership. Numerous technical areas, including watershed management, irrigation
to enhance agricultural productivity, land use planning, water harvesting,
ground water development, wastewater, water storage and distribution and
water quality, will be a part of the centers operations. Funding for the center and the Masters program will come from the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development through the American Council on Education. # # # |
