UNM STUDENT WINS SCHOLARSHIP FOR RUSSIAN STUDY
University of New Mexico senior Elizabeth Peck has been awarded a prestigious
David L. Boren Scholarship to study this summer in Russia.
Peck, from Cortez, Colo., is pursuing a Bachelor of University Studies
(BUS). She will spend seven weeks studying Russian language, literature
and culture at the Center for Russian Studies in Vladimir, Russia. She
will also live with a Russian family during her stay in Vladimir.
Peck is one of 194 outstanding U.S. students chosen to receive the scholarship
out of more than 680 applicants. She has a 4.08 grade point average at
UNM, is on the Dean's List, and is the recipient of a UNM Regent's Scholarship.
She studied two years of Russian language and literature at UNM with Byron
Lindsey, associate professor of foreign languages, who encouraged her
to apply for the scholarship.
The David L. Boren Scholarship, granted by the National Security Education
Program (NSEP), was established by Congress in 1991 to train young Americans
in less commonly taught foreign languages and in understanding of cultures
that are especially important to U.S. foreign policy. The scholarship
is named for former U.S. Senator and current president of the University
of Oklahoma David Boren, who has been instrumental in promoting international
awareness and education during his career.
Recipients of the Boren Scholarship are required to participate in a national
service program working for the U.S. government or in the field of international
education after completing their education. The NSEP program is administered
on behalf of the U.S. Congress by the Institute for International Education,
based in New York.
Peck was placed in the study center in Vladimir by the American Councils
for International Education, which operated programs in more than 40 locations
in Russia Europe and the former Soviet republics.
