UNM PROFESSOR ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF PACIFIC SOCIOLOGY ASSOCIATION

Jane Hood, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology at the University of New Mexico, has been elected vice president of the Pacific Sociology Association (PSA) for 2004.

The PSA, established in 1929 and with offices currently located in the Department of Sociology at California State University-Sacramento, is the professional association of sociologists for the western region of the United States and Canada.

Membership includes professors and students working at colleges and universities located throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but especially those who live in the western region of those countries. The association holds an annual meeting in the spring and publishes a newsletter, The Pacific Sociologist, and a journal, "Sociological Perspectives."

"I am honored to serve as vice president of the organization that accepted my first conference presentation in 1971," Hood said. "I am looking forward to working with President Earl Babbie on the 2004 program in San Francisco. Since Earl and I disagree on some aspects of social research methods, I am hoping that we can arrange a friendly debate."

Hood has been at UNM since 1985. Her research and teaching focuses on family, gender, qualitative methodology, work and occupations.
