June 28, 2002 Los Alamos native achieves goal in becoming bilingual
teacher
I have known since I was sixteen that this is what I wanted to
do in life, Shinas said. I love working with children. Shinas will receive her bachelors degree in elementary education
with an endorsement in bilingual education from the University of New
Mexico this fall. Shinas did her student teaching in a third grade dual-language
classroom at Dolores Gonzales Elementary School in Albuquerque. This summer
she is working at a Montesorri school in Albuquerque and will teach kindergarten
in Albuquerque later this year. Ive been involved in child-care or teaching for about six
years, Shinas said. I hope to use my bilingualism to help
language-minority children obtain an advantage in their education and
to benefit students in my home state. Shinas said she overcame several obstacles while receiving her education.
The first year that I attended UNM I was getting over a severe
illness. That year was I am grateful that with the support of my parents and scholarships
I have not needed to take out any student loans, she said. Shinas said she enjoys UNM and the fact that she was able to acquire
a quality education and still be close to family. I encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a teacher to do
so, she said. The rewards of teaching are exceptional and
making a difference in kids lives is wonderful. The best part of
being a teacher is knowing that you have the opportunity to help someone. She said plans to continue her education and obtain a masters degree. Prior to transferring to UNM main campus, Shinas attended
the UNM Branch Campus in Los Alamos and was an active member of the Student
Government. |
