UNM COMMISSIONED TRUMPET, TROMBONE DUET GOES LIVE ON PBS

A work commissioned by Eric Rombach-Kendall, director of University of New Mexico Bands and associate professor in the Department of Music, will be performed by members of the New York Philharmonic Thursday, July 18, on KNME-TV Channel 5.

The program, "LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER Kurt Masur's Birthday Farewell," airs from 7-9 p.m. The UNM commissioned work, "Fandango," is by New Jersey composer Joseph Turrin. It premiered and was recorded by the UNM Wind Symphony in 2000. Performing it on PBS will be principal trumpet for the New York Philharmonic Phil Smith and principal trombone Joe Alessi.

"These are the same soloists we performed and recorded it with in 2000," says Rombach-Kendall, who served as conductor for the CD "Fandango" and with Arizona State University faculty Sam Pilafian co-produced it. The recording is available worldwide from Summit Records.

The gala farewell concert on PBS also celebrates the 75th birthday of Music Director Kurt Masur, one of the most respected musicians of his generation, as he ends his 11-year collaboration with the New York Philharmonic.

The program will revisit works by Beethoven, Bach, Mendelssohn, Puccini and others that spotlight the range of principal players as soloists. World premieres by two of Masur's favorite composers, Lukas Foss and Siegfreid Matthus, are part of the concert.
