UNM FOUNDATION OFFERS SEMINAR ON PLANNED GIVING
A seminar titled, Dont Give the IRS Your IRA: New Laws Bring New
opportunities for Philanthropy with Retirement Assets, will be sponsored
by the University of New Mexico Foundation Planned Giving office on Thursday,
March 29, from 12-1:30 p.m., in room C at the UNM Continuing Education Conference
Center, 1634 University Blvd., N.E.
This is the second in a series of gift planning seminars designed to address
various aspects of how careful estate planning can benefit individuals, heirs
and charities. The seminar will focus on the tax considerations of owning and
transferring retirement assets, including effects of new Individual Retirement
Account (IRA) distribution rules and pending legislation that may increase the
benefits of gifting assets from an IRA.
Under current tax law, retirement assets held in a traditional IRA, 401 (k)
or 403 (b) account could be the most heavily taxed asset in a persons
estate. The IRS can take as much as 80 percent of these assets at death. Through
explanation and illustration, trust/investment professionals will show how individuals
can reduce this tax burden, benefitting themselves, their families and charities
of choice.
The seminar is free of charge and open to the public with lunch provided. However, space is limited. Interested individuals should make reservations by Monday, March 26. Contact Trudy Lee, manager, Planned Giving at the UNM Foundation at (505) 277-4503 for more information and to make reservations.
