PRESSMAN NAMED AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS FELLOW

Andy PressmanAndy Pressman, director of the architecture program at the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning, has been elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He is one of only 68 individuals to be honored this year.

Advancing to fellowship within AIA is one of the highest honors the organization bestows upon a member. Fellowship recognizes individual achievements, and also recognizes the architect who has made a significant contribution to architecture and society.

As was stated in the notification letter he received from AIA, Pressman was selected because of his "notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture."

Fellowship is granted to those who advance the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training and practice.

Work in education can be teaching, research, administration or writing that will make a lasting impact, be widely recognized and provide inspiration to others in the field and profession.

"The body of educational literature that Andy has published, largely while at UNM, has had a national influence on the design intelligence of students and young practitioners alike," says Roger Schluntz, FAIA, dean, School of Architecture and Planning.

"To the extent that this has in fact been the case is a testimonial to the students and faculty of our splendid School of Architecture and Planning. Andy's election to the College of Fellows is truly a credential to be shared by all of us in this academic community. This very special distinction honors the School of Architecture and Planning as well," he says.

"The recognition that goes along with the title 'FAIA' has to be one of the greatest votes of confidence any professional and his institution can enjoy," says Pressman. "This is a message that we are doing something right. Election to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects affirms our efforts to render accessible the art, science and profession of architecture.

This terrific honor mandates me personally to continue to illuminate both the pragmatics and the intangibles that move us toward excellent practice and ongoing professional growth."

Pressman will be presented his Fellowship medal during the Investiture of Fellow Ceremony on May 10 in Charlotte, N.C. at the annual National AIA convention.
