UNM RANKED IN TOP 25 LIST OF HISPANIC MAGAZINE

The University of New Mexico is ranked 24th on Hispanic Magazine’s top 25 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics in the March 2002 issue of the magazine and is the only school in New Mexico to be ranked on the list.

UNM President William C. Gordon said being ranked on Hispanic Magazine’s list shows that UNM is committed to being a Hispanic serving institution.

“I am grateful that Hispanic Magazine continues to recognize UNM as a top ranked university for Hispanics,” Gordon said.

The list mentions the architecture of UNM’s campus which illustrates Spanish and Pueblo Indian influences. It mentions two of UNM’s strongest academic programs in Latin American affairs and Southwest Hispanic studies. The list recognizes UNM’s position in the second tier of America’s Best Colleges which indicates the school’s overall academic excellence.

The 2002 list of the top 25 colleges and universities for Hispanics lists institutions that are succeeding in recruiting and retaining Hispanic students. In order to be considered for the list, the colleges needed to show that their student bodies were reflective of the overall United States population of Hispanics. The number of Latinos graduating from the colleges was also considered.

Other criteria included the number of Hispanic-related degree programs, Hispanic student organizations, recruiting, minority support programs and Hispanic faculty.
