UNM School of Engineering Honors Six Alumni
The University of New Mexico School of Engineering, along with the Engineering
Chapter of the UNM Alumni Association, has chosen six engineers to honor at
the 4th Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet March 22 at the Albuquerque
Petroleum Club.
Alumni to be honored are Brian G. Burnett, Delores M. Etter, Richard D. Jimenez,
Stephen A. Matthews, Andres C. Salazar and David J. Loaiza.
Burnett is the president of Bohannan Huston. He received his BSCE in 1978 and
his MS in Hydrology & Water Resources in 1980.
Etter is a professor of electrical engineering at the United States Naval Academy,
Annapolis, MD. She is the first female to receive this distinction. She received
her Ph.D. EE in 1979.
Jimenez is the president and owner of Applied Sciences Laboratory, Inc. in
Albuquerque. He received his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering in 1989.
Matthews is retired and is a process control computer consultant. He received
his BSChE in 1961.
Salazar, Ph.D., is president of Suntek Industries, Inc., a business consulting
firm located in Santa Fe. His degrees from UNM include a BA/Math, BSEE in 1964
(with distinction), and MSEE in 1965.
Loaiza, will receive a young alumni award. He is a nuclear engineer/technical
staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received his BSNE in 1992,
MSNE in 1993, and Ph.D. Engineering in 1997 and MBA in 2001.
The six alumni were chosen based on their demonstrated professional eminence
and community service. As the nomination form states: The UNM engineering
program has produced outstanding, well-prepared engineers for almost a century.
These graduates have gone on to serve their profession, communities, society
and the university.
A laser light show will be presented by Greg Spankey Spies, senior
technician from the School of Engineering Electrical Engineering Department.
The keynote address will be given by Andrew C. Strebe, dealer operations manager,
Ford Motor Company. Master of ceremonies will be Kenneth D. Hansen, BSAE-1955,
distinguished alumni honoree, 2001.
Tickets are $40 each or $75 per couple. A table of eight may be purchased as
a scholarship sponsor for $750, or as a deans fund sponsor for $1,000.
Cocktails begin at 6:15 and the program begins at 7 p.m.
